What is greywater?

Greywater is gently used water from your bathroom sinks, showers, tubs, and washing machines.Greywater may contain traces of dirt, food, grease, hair, and certain household cleaning products. While greywater may look “dirty,” it is a safe and even beneficial source of irrigation water in a yard. Keep in mind that if greywater is released into rivers, lakes, or estuaries, its nutrients become pollutants, but to plants, they are valuable fertilizer. Aside from the obvious benefits of saving water (and money on your water bill), reusing your greywater keeps it out of the sewer or septic system, thereby reducing the chance that it will pollute local water bodies. Reusing greywater for irrigation reconnects urban residents and our backyard gardens to the natural water cycle.

What types of greywater systems are there?

Accepted Answer

The easiest greywater system to install is a laundry-to-landscape (L2L) system. This will be the lowest cost to entry system and provides a great benefit to your surrounding landscape.

Other greywater systems include systems that utilize the greywater from showers and sinks. These systems are generally more costly and time consuming to install.

How much water does a Laundry-to-Landscape greywater system run to my yard?

Accepted Answer

You can expect anywhere from 10-20 gallons per load of laundry depending on the load size. (If you're doing just 2 loads per week, thats between 1,040gal. and 2,080 gal. per year that's going back into your local ecology!)

Can L2L greywater be used for drip irrigation?

Accepted Answer

As laundry greywater is generally filled with sediment and dirt, it would need to be filtered heavily in order to not clog the drip irrigation lines. Instead, we recommend using larger lines that lead to the bases of fruit baring trees, bushes, or shrubs by a long flexible line called Blu-lock.

We recommend between 6 and 10 large bushes or trees.

What types of plants or trees should I direct my L2L greywater to?

Accepted Answer

Larger bushes, fruit baring trees, shrubs, etc. are perfect candidates for L2L greywater.
